Recovery Act Invests in Broadband – Finally, Something Important

The National Economic Council & VP Biden recently announced $2 billion dollars in grants and awards aimed at expanding the nation’s broadband access. It’s called “Recovery Act Investments in Broadband,” a bland title for a big program that’ll be rolled out over the next 75 days.
You can download the the full report here, but that’s boring – wouldn’t you rather I summed it up for you with some handy bullet points?
- Broadband leads to economic improvement (new WoW users, more people buying hats marked “internet,” etc)
- The internet backbone doesn’t reach “middle mile” networks in poor and under served communities
- The term “middle mile” 18 more times without defining it at all
- Money going to schools, libraries and hospitals to improve their broadband access (good)
- No money going to sex criminals, terrorists (also good)
- “Money for internet = good” repeated endlessly for the last 12 pages
On second thought, you might want to read the report yourself.
