FBI Nails Cable Modem Hacker
A 26 year old man named Matthew Delorey was apparently running a website called “Massmodz.com,” which sold cable modems that were hacked and reconfigured to allow the buyer access to free, untraceable internet access. Well, seeing as that is something of a gigantic crime, an undercover FBI agent purchased two of them in a sting operation, followed by the arresting of Mr. Delorey.
I had no idea such a device was even possible – it sounds like a plot point from a bad techno-thriller (“With these chips, no-one will be able to trace us!”), but it was apparently possible enough to incur two charges – one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of actual wire fraud. Each carries a 20 year maximum prison sentence.
In addition to selling them on his website, he also sold them over craigslist and appeared in a Youtube video testifying to their efficacy. If only more criminals were so open about their crimes.
