Motorola Introduces Augmented Reality Eyepiece
Finally: a piece of augmented reality tech that’s as useful as it is cool looking. The Golden-i, a joint venture between Motorola and miniature display maker Kopin, serves as a computer to those whose hands are busy doing actual, useful things. Designed to fit under a construction helmet, the Golden-i’s tiny eyepiece provides the equivalent of a 15 inch display, and comes with a headphone, microphone, Bluetooth & Wi-Fi baked in.
It’s voice controlled, and according to the reviewer at Wired who tried it out, the voice commands were perfect (though sadly, he reports that saying “enhance” didn’t do anything). The voice control’s pretty smart – it’ll only recognize commands if there’s a gap before them, so saying “My Music” will open a folder whereas saying “Hey, if there’s one thing I love, it’s my music” will do nothing. Sharp!
Apparently the device needs to be “ruggedized,” which is a fun new word I hope to use all the time, before it’ll reach the construction site, but still – this thing looks very, very cool. Now all I need is a job important enough to warrant an eye-mounted computer!
