Iowa Bank Using GPS Device to Deter Robbers
After being robbed twice last year, the Linn County State Bank in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is addressing the problem with GPS technology. The bank is placing credit card-sized devices into bundles of money so they can be tracked by the police in case they are grabbed by nefarious bad guys. Bank President/CEO Bill Ajram believes the devices will reduce robberies because banks won’t be “simple prey.”
I fully endorse banks and other businesses employing modern technology to increase the safety and efficiency of their business, but I see a major flaw in the GPS tracker solution: Unless banks start posting signs saying “We place GPS trackers in money,” then they need to be robbed in order for criminals to learn that the money will be tracked. Good plan, Iowa.
