Cities, Mayors Go Crazy To Woo Google

A while back we reported on Google Fiber, a program where Google will come to cities and install incredibly internet access. The only way to get that access, however, is for the cities citizens and government to specifically request it. Google’s provided two forms on a website for people to make these requests, but people are going a lot further than that. Check out what some cities are doing to get Google Fiber installed in their town:

  • Mayor Don Ness jumped into a freezing lake, then put the video on YouTube, exclaiming, “All right, you other mayors! You want Google Fiber, you jump in Lake Superior!”
  • Topeka, Kansas has (informally) changed its name to Google, Kansas for the month of March.
  • A Google map of 1,000 Baltimore citizens has been created, with each citizen marker giving a reason why they’d want the service.
  • Over 200 Facebook groups have been created to woo big G to their cities.

The fiber optic access would be sold wholesale to local providers, who’d then sell it to consumers at retail. The 1 gigabyte/second service would be 50-100 times faster than the internet provided by traditional providers.
