New Procedure Offers Faster Healing For Fractures, *SNIKT*
Wolverine’s healing factor is now ours, all ours!
Right now, if you want to knit bones together, it takes a while. Researchers have found a way to speed the whole thing up by tapping into a thin tissue called “periosteum,” which is found lining all bones and contains delicious, bone transforming stem cells.
To repair major breaks and fractures, scientists simply wrap the affected area in a sleeve of periosteum, which encourages rapid bone regrowth. If the patient doesn’t have enough periosteum, doctors have developed an artificial membrane that can act as a substitute. Neat!
The substance can also aid in the lengthening of bones – the example used by Technology Review involved a woman in a wheelchair who needed to lengthen one of her legs. The way they used periosteum in her case is as complicated as it is gross, so instead of mangling the technique I’ll simply refer you to the full article below. However, if you really want me to they…cut into her leg, peel back the periosteum, cut some bone off and…*PUKE*
