Earth’s Mightiest Magnetic Material Created
Attention magnet lovers – there is a new magnet king on the block!
Until now, the strongest magnetic material on earth has been a mixture of iron and cobalt. Well, iron-cobalt, you can go straight to hell! There’s a new mightiest magnetic material on the block, and it’s called “a compound containing iron and nitrogen.”
The new substance was created by University of Minnesota physicist Jianping Wang, and there’s an unverified report that the material may be so strong it’s rewriting the laws of physics.
How? Apparently, Wang discovered “localized electrons” in his compound, which are substances that have never shown up in magnetic substances before. That’s needlessly cool – a magnet so strong that it’s pulling in crap we assumed wasn’t magnetic? I’ll take eight!
How will this supermagnet help us? More efficient transmission and power generation, apparently, which I’m all for. Also, if there’s something magnetic you need that’s across the room, this magnet’s got your back.
