Attention, Foursquare phonies! Your time has come.

Foursquare has taken the no duh step of using your phone’s built in GPS to make sure that you’re actually near the venue you’re checking into. Why this wasn’t the case from the beginning  is a mystery to me, but it’s a welcome addition.

For those of you who may not know due to having a life, Foursquare is a little mobile app that tracks the shopping and social habits of you and your friends. When you arrive at a movie theater or restaurant, you whip out your smartphone and “check in,” possibly noticing nearby friends in the process.

To make Foursquare more fun, badges and fancy titles are handed out to power users – for example, if you go to one bar and check in often, you’ll be made the “mayor” of that bar, an honor all can see upon checking into said bar. For some people, this is all they have.

Bravo, Foursquare!

I've written for National Lampoon & Cracked Magazine, been featured on NPR's "Marketplace", and had a pilot screen at the New York Television Festival. I've performed stand-up all over NY, Boston & LA. I love Babylon 5, yelling at the TV with my dad and naps.

  • I still feel that building a reputation system into the app is the way to stop cheating on Foursquare. Essentially that’s the same process that happens in the real world.
