A Russian hacker took his skills to market, the stock market. According to the Security Exchange Commission said that his scheme cost the market $600,000 and left the hacker with a profit of over $250,000.

The SEC froze the assets of the hackers apparent front company, Bronco Investments after catching on.

The scheme was an ingenious one — changing the price of stocks on small trading spots, then selling his own stocks on bigger sites when other people jumped on the rising prices.

Broco would purchase these and other stocks in its own portfolio and immediately place unauthorized buy orders at inflated prices of the same securities in hacked Scottrade accounts, the SEC said.

“Immediately or shortly thereafter, the defendants capitalized on the artificially inflated share prices of the targeted securities by selling the shares previously acquired in their account,” the SEC alleged. “In other instances, the defendants profited by covering short positions previously established in their account while placing unauthorized sell orders through the compromised accounts at substantially lower prices.”

The scam is just one in a series of pricey incidents that have spawned from the proliferation of online trading worldwide.

I had no idea such a device was even possible – it sounds like a plot point from a bad techno-thriller (“With these chips, no-one will be able to trace us!”), but it was apparently possible enough to incur two charges – one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of actual wire fraud. Each carries a 20 year maximum prison sentence.

In addition to selling them on his website, he also sold them over craigslist and appeared in a Youtube video testifying to their efficacy. If only more criminals were so open about their crimes.

How much cash? Between $500 and $1337 (get it?), depending on the severity of the bug. You need to be the first to report the bug to Google’s bug tracker, and are free to tell the whole world about Google’s embarrassing security vulnerability while still collecting your loot – this isn’t a “cash for silence” gambit, it looks like Google seriously just wants its bugs gone.

Very clever, Google. Rewarding the internet for punching hole after hole in your software, which is what they were planning on doing anyway. Can anyone imagine Microsoft doing anything similar? I can’t – if they gave cash for every bug found in IE or Windows 7 it might well bankrupt the company! (ZING!)

It feels like it’s been a long time since Nintendo dropped the “Game Boy” line in favor of the multi-screened DS, but still… it hasn’t been this long.

Check out this detailed hack by Thretris, which takes the classic Game Boy, released in 1989, and adds a whole bunch of sprockets, gears and gold paint. The result is a Victorian-looking portable gaming system for steampunk folks. It’s what Jules Verne’s Game Boy would look like, though thankfully he never had one. Otherwise, instead of writing science fiction novels, he would have obsessed over beating Bugs Bunny’s Crazy Castle. In that alternative universe, Jules Verne and I have a lot in common. (In case you’re wondering, it’s Earth-8456.)

As the title implies, the Victorian Game Boy makes me feel pretty old. I was a little kid when I begged for a Game Boy to be my only Christmas present ever. Now I’m an adult and the Game Boy is so old, it’s being made to look like a Victorian gadget. What’s next? A steam powered Teddy Ruxbin? Well, I suppose my old pet rock actually could have been invented in the stone age.

The future of weaponry is here. For too long, we have allowed soda cans to terrorize us, enslave us and put us in Human Camps. Well, tonight we break free. We will overthrow our fizzy oppressors. For tonight, we have acquired the awesome MV CoilMaster Mark 1 coil gun!

Coil guns are devices that shoot magnetized projectiles using electromagnets. There’s a whole world of developers creating new ones. The picture above is of the new coil gun from Daniel Eindhoven. It’s semi-automatic, it can fire up to 14 shots and it looks like the Ghostbusters’ back-up weapon. If you knock The Dematerializer out of Winston’s hand, he’ll pull this on you. Also, the Mark 1 has so many lights inside it. Why can’t regular handguns have a bunch of crazy lasers all over them? Why can’t I live in Tron?

In the video below, we see Daniel blasting through soda can after soda can. Then he pulverizes a piece of plexiglass and takes out a lamp. I think it’s clear that this weapon will be our salvation in our 20 year battle against the cans. When it comes to the CoilMaster Mark 1, they simply can-not handle it.

America’s unofficial internet war with China continues. Recently, Google told off the Chinese government, saying the search giant would no longer censor their site’s search results. This was in response to a series of hacks on Chinese human rights activists, potentially by (or in connection to) the Chinese government. Well, now it looks like China may have been sanctioning hackers since 2008.

Christian Science Monitor reports that three gas and oil companies — ExxonMobil, Marathon Oil and ConocoPhillips — were the target of Chinese hackers in ‘08. Apparently, the hackers were after all-important, ultra-secret “bid value” documents, which shows the value and location of oil worldwide. Classified information definitely flowed out of the computers of high level oil executives, who were the victims of these attacks.

Experts say that China has many hacker clubs, which are watched closely by their government. Are hackers being watched closely or getting recruited? Seems like we don’t know for sure, but many people are very suspicious, especially since the government is such a powerful force in China.

Luckily, American hackers are ready to respond. We refuse to take this lying down, and America is ready to fight! Check out our newest and brightest hackers in action:

MakerBot showed off their new Cupcake CNC at the Consumer Electronics Show and there was a constant crowd trying to get a glimpse at the 3-D plastic printer. Basically the printer draws each layer of a design, then draws the next on top of it.

According to a MakerBot press release it works just like a glue gun.

To get a sense of how it works, imagine an extremely accurate, programmable glue gun. The Cupcake CNC starts by drawing a picture of the first layer of your object in plastic. It then raises the extruder up 1/3rd of a millimeter and draws the next layer. When all the layers are complete, you’ve manufactured a 3D object from your own or an open source design.

The device serves — a DIY kit itself– as a good glimpse into the subculture of do-it-yourself technology. While it’s not financially connected to Make Magazine or the popular open-source Audrino chip and operating system, MakerBot’s founder Bre Pettis has plenty of connections. Pettis created videos for Make Magazine and the MakerBot printer runs on the Audrino system.

The first few printers that come up on a Google search are $14,900 and $35,000, and the cheapest one on EBay is 4,999.98, so at $950 the MakerBot printer is a bit easier on the pocket book.

The printer can be used to make a robot shell for one of the many robotics kits out there or make a little gondola for a blimp kit.

At even the low price of $950, the MakerBot 3-D printer is a bit rich for the occasional tinkerer, but since the DIY movement is incredibly well connected, it could make a great addition to a local hackerspace and would be quite affordable if a few members split the cost. Renting out the MakerBot to other local makers could make up for a lot of the costs as well, though I didn’t find anything on Craigslist, talking to local makers could put one on the right track.

All in all, the MakerBot printer is a really interesting step in DIY tech and gets techies closer to putting their imaginations instead of their money into their new gizmo.

Below is some more video of the MakerBot printer in action at the 2010 CES.

Here’s a hilariously simple way to boost your wireless signal: throw the modem in a pot! Bouncing off the pot’s metal interior amplifies the signal and gives you a quick boost to signal strength. This YouTube video shows the simple hack in action.

When we hear the word ‘hack,’ we envision Iraqi insurgents controlling drones like RC planes, firing off hellfire missiles at confused U.S. troops.

‘Hack’ is too strong a word. The Shiite fighters were able to gain access to video feeds of predator drones, but not remotely interact with them. Some question if the video was live, and if fighters could even benefit from it.

So, let’s find out. I’ll download & install skygrabber right now, and I’ll audio record my process to tell you what kind of crazy shit I find.
