An earth-orbiting satellite got a front row seat for the latest solar eclipse.

As the video shows, the event is very interesting and a bit unnerving when sped up so quickly.

The European Space Agency’s Proba 2 satellite was designed to observe the sun with new technology, so more stunning views like this are on the horizon.

A small section of a Google announcement carried a lot of weight today.

Pinch-to-zoom functionality: devices will now include a new pinch-to-zoom mechanism in the phone’s Browser, Gallery and Maps applications

That little, innocuous and unpunctuated comment is HUGE! Until now, only the iPhone has had native multitouch — and it took a lot of hassle, hacking and unlocking to get it on other phones.

The Nexus One was already at the top of my gadget wish list, and now it’s taken over part of my number two gadget.

Also included in the update was native Google Goggles AR application and synchronization with online Google maps via the Maps application — making it easy to search online and mobile history on board.

Here’s a quick little video from the guys at Funny or Die, the viral video site run by Adam Mckay and Will Ferrell. In it, Pee-wee Herman and his puppet pals find the best possible use for Apple’s new iPad. Today’s secret word is “Useless!”

Funny or Die’s always reliable for great viral videos, and on February 19th, they’re heading to the slightly larger small screen with a new series on HBO, called Funny or Die Presents. It’s always cool to see what happens when the entertainment of the internet intersects with traditional media, so we at Technomaly will be looking forward to the premiere.

Alright, there are a lot of augmented reality things that really don’t seem to do much and a whole lot of hype. But I must say, augmented reality tattoos are really cool and raise a lot of interesting possibilities.

As is apparent in the video, the computer reads the tattoo and displays it as a flying dragon — awesome right? Now what if these tattoos (permanent or temporary) could be stuck on someone and display contact information or connect a user to their Facebook profile, LinkdIn etc. Never have to tag another photo!

And the best thing about augmented reality tattoos, when you get bored of that fairy tramp stamp, you can update it to a bald eagle or a badass dragon — which you could never get bored of.

Adidas unveiled this teaser video and said that it will embed augmented reality codes into a new line of shoes.

In 2010, we’re celebrating a lot of firsts at Adidas Originals — here’s one. We’ve created a collection of shoes with an augmented reality code built directly into the design. These five special kicks, the Adidas Originals AR Game Pack, will unlock an exciting online experience with challenging games an exclusive content living within a virtual version of the Adidas Originals Neighborhood.

The new shoes and “online experience” launch Feb. 10, but the details are few. The shoes look nice, but I wonder if the AR code will just be an extra few dollars so that you can help Adidas advertise.

If the idea of metallic exoskeletons crushing human skulls under foot in the battle scarred wastes of post-apocalyptic Los Angeles no longer instills fear in your all-too-fleshy human bits, the roboticists at Israel’s Ben Gurion University would like to invite you to their new nightmare: Robots that climb walls.

Now some of you may be watching this video, thinking, “Wow! That’s pretty ingenious! That electromagnetic robot would be really useful on metal surfaces, and that one with the glue and tread system would work anywhere!” You’d then mince away, giggling to yourself as your mind fills with practical, world-changing applications for these clever machines.

Of course, that would make you a filthy ‘bot sympathizer. When the metal ones start crawling in your windows and stabbing your portly security guards in the face, don’t come crying to me. Or Sam Waterston.

As she said, the Que is targeted toward business readers. So is the price, when the reader is released in April prices will be a whopping $649 for the 4GB model and $799 for the 8GB model — which will also feature 3G on top of the Wi-Fi that is featured on both.

This bloody, gruesome PSA about texting while driving is as ridiculously violent as a Tarantino film. In the video, a young girl is chatting with her friends and text messaging on her phone, instead of watching the road. What results is :20 seconds of gory, slow motion car crashes, followed by 3:30 minutes of hysterical crying and a little girl asking why her parents aren’t waking up.

I understand that the filmmakers were striving for “realism,” but too much melodrama makes the video feel like an awkward exaggeration. I think you’ve got to decide between the teenager constantly crying, the newly orphaned little girl and the lifeless baby. Put in all three, and you might as well add a school bus crashing into a zoo, killing all the children and several sneezing panda cubs.

Despite claims to the contrary there are exactly three reasons for the Internet to exist: free porn, badgers and Chinese cartoons starring anthropomorphized flying war machines who all vaguely resemble John “Cliff Clavin” Ratzenberger.

I don’t know when the Chinese developed such obvious affection for Boston’s finest fictional mailman, but I’m glad they did because the end result is a bizarre children’s cartoon that simultaneously balances Cars-esque visuals with bomb loadouts realistic enough to give Chuck Yeager a raging jetboner.

With our economy in a shambles, and our finest sports stars embroiled in the sort of sex scandals you’d expect from our finest sports stars, the world could use more nonsensical weirdness like this. Well played China.

Instead of shacking up Brokeback-style in the mountains of Wyoming, Mr. Lebron has opted to immortalize his little blue paramour via the most traditional of means: A feature length, home made film.

The most impressive bit is that the flick proudly wears its low budget, fan made aesthetic like a certificate of authenticity turned medal of honor, and yet still manages to look way more respectful of its source material than any of Hollywood’s attempts at turning a beloved video game into a film.

Of course, I’m basing all of that on the surprisingly awesome trailer and the newly released Sneak Preview, but, according to Lebron, we don’t have much longer to wait to catch the film in its entirety.

“The next big question is: when will it be released?  The film shall be released online 2 weeks after the premiere.  Well, when will the premiere be?  I don’t want to say officially when it will but I do have a specific time frame in mind and it’s soon … very soon,” Lebron writes in a recent blog entry. “Without giving too much, the film will be premiered before the summer.”

Using only their minds, our crack team of mathemagicians crunched the numbers, and assuming Mr. Lebron’s film can avoid any crippling delays, we have, at maximum, a six month wait ahead of us; An almost insignificant time frame if Lebron can deliver on his hype.

Little did I know that the same person was responsible for just about every facet of gaming there ever will be: Ralph Baer.

I took some time and watched this great interview with Baer, who described his many, many groundbreaking inventions. (It’s 17 minutes, but well worth a lunch break.)

Baer, a German Jew who escaped the country before the Nazi’s came to power, began his career as a radio technician. But after working with military intelligence, earning a bachelors of science and a few stints as a designer, he started his own company with defense-electronics in mind.

While he was working on defense applications, he took a noted detour and created the first video game console. He then added a light gun to the console and whipped up a little game called Simon.

If that weren’t enough, Baer also designed a way for people to play games, such as his Pong, through cable lines. Nobody, sadly, thought much of it and decided not to buy his invention, delaying console-to-console gaming by decades.

He created a number of other toys, gadgets and gizmos up until his retirement in 1987.

In 2006, Baer was awarded the National Medal of Technology by George W. Bush for his work on video games.

Is Baer the government’s answer to keeping intelligent, technology-savvy people from doing anything productive? Probably not, but he is truly a genius who was decades ahead of his time and we can thank him for basically inventing video games — despite the fact that our thumbs, brains and time is hurting.

It’s a wonder that he ever existed, let alone is still kicking. Nobody in the sphere of video games comes close to his level of genius.

It can survive a 10-story drop. It can be submerged in water for up to half an hour. It can even be used to drive nails into walls.

Yet there was one force that the cellular phone designers at Sonim didn’t count on when they unveiled their “unbreakable” phone at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas: The power of a tiny Anglican tech reporter.

BBC journalist Dan Simmons spoke to Sonim CEO Bob Plaschke who was so confident about his product’s durability that he promised to give a free handset to anyone who could actually manage to break anything. Fate, seemingly taking Plaschke’s words as a direct challenge to her rule of all known reality, giggled maniacally, then clapped aloud as Simmons smashed the phone to pieces on the side of a glass fish tank no more than 40 seconds later.

Plaschke attempts to maintain his cool, but it’s obvious that he’d rather crawl into a hole and die. Today Schadenfreude tastes like broken plastic.

Alright, it is official electronic cigarettes are awesome. Just look how gritty, sexy and real these people are.

Who cares about quitting smoking or being healthy or not smelling like ass. I just want to hop in bed with hot people that probably live in New York and wear black all the time. Plus I don’t have to go outside and leave the cool apartment where the cool people hang out.

I think I’ll get mine in purple, like Mace Windu’s lightsaber.

The band C-Mon and Kypski has a really interesting music video/viral campaign/collaborative work of art for the band’s new We Are Square album.

Basically, the video is a collection of people taking pictures of themselves with their webcams interspersed with the band members. The combination makes for a really personal and really fascinating stop-motion video of all the contributors.

This type of collaborative art is really fascinating and it actually puts the fans and the band together closer than any twitter feed or forum could. The fans actually become a piece of the art — for an hour at least.
According to the site, the video is updated every hour to include the latest people to help out. So do your part for art and post for the camera.

When a loved one dies, most people honor their memory by attending a funeral, donating to a charity or offering condolences with a card. Inventor Douglas Hines decided to honor a friend who died during the terrorist attacks of September 11th by creating an animatronic, Wi-Fi sex doll. Well, I suppose we all grieve differently!

Making its debut at this year’s Adult Entertainment Expo was Roxxxy the sex robot, which looks like a blow-up doll hooked up to a laptop. The developers have programmed Roxxxy with multiple personalities, including Wild Windy, Frigid Farrah and S&M Susan. She’s also touch sensitive, as Douglas demonstrates with the video above. I can’t decide what’s weirder: the origin story of this sex doll or the awkwardly long pause it takes for Roxxxy to recognize you’re futzing with her privates.

The Motorola Backflip was named the top upcoming cell phone at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show and I can see why, it was incredibly fast.

The modified Android system was set up for social media especially and got tweets, Facebook updates and the like to the screen nearly instantly.

Launching with Android 1.5, the Backflip will be upgradable to Android 2.1. It will also feature a 5 megapixel camera, 3.1 inch HVGA — which was very responsive — and a 528 MHz Qualcomm processor. The phone also comes with Motoblur functionality; which backs up all the contact information including social media data and pictures.

CNET said that the Backflip had one especially novel feature:

Another unique feature of the Backflip is the trackpad, which Moto calls Backtrack, located on the back of the display (when the phone is open). It works just like a traditional trackpad, allowing you to navigate through menus, flip through photos, scroll through the home screen panes, and more.

According to a MakerBot press release it works just like a glue gun.

To get a sense of how it works, imagine an extremely accurate, programmable glue gun. The Cupcake CNC starts by drawing a picture of the first layer of your object in plastic. It then raises the extruder up 1/3rd of a millimeter and draws the next layer. When all the layers are complete, you’ve manufactured a 3D object from your own or an open source design.

The device serves — a DIY kit itself– as a good glimpse into the subculture of do-it-yourself technology. While it’s not financially connected to Make Magazine or the popular open-source Audrino chip and operating system, MakerBot’s founder Bre Pettis has plenty of connections. Pettis created videos for Make Magazine and the MakerBot printer runs on the Audrino system.

The first few printers that come up on a Google search are $14,900 and $35,000, and the cheapest one on EBay is 4,999.98, so at $950 the MakerBot printer is a bit easier on the pocket book.

The printer can be used to make a robot shell for one of the many robotics kits out there or make a little gondola for a blimp kit.

At even the low price of $950, the MakerBot 3-D printer is a bit rich for the occasional tinkerer, but since the DIY movement is incredibly well connected, it could make a great addition to a local hackerspace and would be quite affordable if a few members split the cost. Renting out the MakerBot to other local makers could make up for a lot of the costs as well, though I didn’t find anything on Craigslist, talking to local makers could put one on the right track.

All in all, the MakerBot printer is a really interesting step in DIY tech and gets techies closer to putting their imaginations instead of their money into their new gizmo.

The Beamz interactive instrument is an interesting take on making music. Instead of actually learning an instrument, musicians can simply wave through a laser trigger to trigger a different “musical event.”

What does that mean? Well, watch the video. But basically every move through the laser sparks a bass beat, a drum fill or a synth riff.

It looks like a fun gizmo, but unless a DJ really wants something novel on stage I don’t see it exploding on the music scene.

The device comes in two versions, one for $199 with a preset package of songs and a $299 version for upgraded software that allows the user to tweak the sounds and add their own music for use with the Beamz.

Here’s a pair of really cool, futuristic gadgets that turn the desktop into an empty desk.

The evoMouse mouseless mouse and projected keyboard are one of my favorite things at the Consumer Electronics Show. I’d seen the keyboard a while back, but never thought I’d be playing with one. It works pretty well for the level of technology and the small size.

There were a few little hiccups, but those could easily be attributed to trying to type on a new keyboard. When I first got a phone with a virtual keyboard I typed like a 13-year-old girl for weeks.

The mouse was great, and looks like a little robot dog. And it has full multitouch capabilities, truly a magic mouse.

I got a chance to take Lego Universe for a spin at the Consumer Electronics Show, and I must say, LEGO’s attempt at an MMO was already well polished and a lot of fun.

Basically, it’s an MMO like any other but with a few features taken from the previous LEGO games. The combat, for instance, is quick and click happy, just like the console games. I got to run around killing LEGO robots with a LEGO spear — with a small set of move combinations.

Players also collect LEGO pieces like the console games, but these pieces all add up to the end game fun of building your own LEGO creations.

While the game certainly seems to be tailored toward the casual gamer, there are deeper game play options. LEGO volunteers said there would be group dynamics and quests that would require more than one person. One also said there would be a “way to tailor your game play.” That cryptic quote came when I asked about classes in LEGO Universe, so it seems there will be additional powers, but no definite word has been released on those thus far.

There is certainly experience, which grants more health at the very least. But what else the experience unlocked is unclear.

Speaking of the end game, one of the volunteers was tinkering with the LEGO Digital Designer which will be featured prominently in the end game.

There will be a little plot of land at the end and places to share your creations. I asked if it would be possible to drive your creations around, and a volunteer said that while there would be small interactive features in those plots but nothing major.

The volunteer did say there would be races and modular sets to find to compete with other players.

I personally cannot wait to get a further look at the game and waited in a long line to get a free LEGO man and sign up for the beta test.

LEGO Universe is still in family and friends alpha testing, but expect to hear more about it in the future.

I got a chance to peek at the Peregrine Gaming Glove at the Consumer Electronics Show, it looks pretty sweet for serious gaming.

Basically, as the video shows, you can bind any keystroke to a spot on the glove. Touch the thumb to the second knuckle on your ring finger and you can switch weapon sets. Touch again at the tip of the pointer finger, and toss a grenade.

It looks to be especially useful in games with a lot of abilities like the one demoed. I think it would be perfect for FPSs though. Hypothetically, if someone were not sober and playing Modern Warfare 2 in the dark it could be difficult to call in that airstrike without throwing a grenade on accident — hypothetically of course.

The pro gamer also mentioned the glove’s use for feature-heavy programs like Photoshop — especially for artists. Finding Shift+Ctrl+Y (I don’t know, I just crop stuff) is annoying and navigating through the menus while trying to use a stylus pad takes the artist out of the creative moment.

The glove is only available for preorders right now, and at $130 it’s sure to price out all but hardcore gamers and maybe the occasional artist or graphic designer.

This is by far the coolest thing I’ve seen at the Consumer Electronics Show so far. The iPhone drone is just so, so awesome.

The possibilities of this thing are nearly endless. Citizen journalists could use this as a front line video capture device, sending video stories high directly to the internet. Firefighters and rescuers could use it to peek in windows and in unstable rubble to look for victims or survivors.

And of course you can use it to spy on your neighbors, scare the dog and generally goof around.

Reps I talked to said the price point would likely be around $249. It’s still a toy, surely, and I’d like to see how it handles in a little wind, but what a great gadget. I’ve seen larger industry versions for photographers, but the price reaches toward $5,000 and up.

Reps said there is no plan for an Android app, but they didn’t rule it out.

One of Vixen’s huge reflector telescopes has one feature that made it perfect for the Consumer Electronics show.

Attached to the telescope is a mini map so that astronomers can point directly where they want to look, and actually know what is there.

So instead of looking at star charts and compasses, the device has a sort of Google SkyMap wired right in, including pictures of what astronomers should spot at the other end.

At around $12,000, the gadget isn’t for the novice, but for anyone who really, really likes space, it could be a great time and effort saving device.

It’s been a long time coming, but Polaroid has another instant-print camera, and it’s super fast and fun, despite being clunky and shooting in only 5 megapixels.

This will surely bring back the fun of instant printing for anyone who buys the $300 camera. Polaroid also showed off some interesting instant photo art by a photographer. It’s a bunch of little pictures, so I’ll leave it up to your imagination.

The lady was nice enough to shoot a 2×3 image of me taking a video of her.

It’s one of the few TVs that isn’t 3-D that many people bothered looking at at the Consumer Electronics Show.

It’s nothing special on the TV part, but the fact that the whole thing slides back and forth makes it a really visually apealing addition to a home entertainment system. Slide it over to reveal the DVDs, slide it back to play Wii, etc.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled a new product yesterday at CES 2010 and it’s… a tablet PC? Hey, isn’t Apple supposed to be making one of those? Perhaps in an attempt to beat Apple to the multi-touch punch, Ballmer demonstrated HP’s new slate PC, capable of running Windows 7. They posted a teaser video on YouTube (above), which is currently getting hammered in the comments section:

Vismund: “this amazing device will sell 20 units…”

jewjack: “IM GUNNA BUY TWO! (one when it comes out, and the second to replace the first when it breaks down)”

rhadiem: “This is just another sad case of HP/Microsoft trying to copy Apple and have some of the magic pixie dust rub off on them. What they didn’t show was :20 seconds into the video the slate caught a virus, bluescreened and after a 4 minute reboot the only app for it was the HP logo sizer and a half-baked use of multitouch for Paintbrush.”

There are some positive comments as well, along with the usual PC vs. Mac “X ripped off Y” jibber jabber. However, with over 200,000 views and an average rating of 2 stars, it can’t be ALL Mac evangelists down-voting this video… or can it? It’ll be interesting to see what people think of a demonstration that’s longer than 18 seconds.
