    The rumor mills are churning, overflowing with misinformation about Apple’s heavily rumored tablet mac.  As we get ready for Apple’s unveiling on the 27th, the blogosphere has been speculating on what the computer will be named.  Rather than wait patiently and find out, we at Technomaly want to throw a few false names out there, to keep this delightfully uninformed conversation going. Who knows?  If we guess enough times, we might actually be right.

    So here are 10 potential names for the device, in order from most to least likely:

    Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled a new product yesterday at CES 2010 and it’s… a tablet PC? Hey, isn’t Apple supposed to be making one of those? Perhaps in an attempt to beat Apple to the multi-touch punch, Ballmer demonstrated HP’s new slate PC, capable of running Windows 7. They posted a teaser video on YouTube (above), which is currently getting hammered in the comments section:

    Vismund: “this amazing device will sell 20 units…”

    jewjack: “IM GUNNA BUY TWO! (one when it comes out, and the second to replace the first when it breaks down)”

    rhadiem: “This is just another sad case of HP/Microsoft trying to copy Apple and have some of the magic pixie dust rub off on them. What they didn’t show was :20 seconds into the video the slate caught a virus, bluescreened and after a 4 minute reboot the only app for it was the HP logo sizer and a half-baked use of multitouch for Paintbrush.”

    SteelVelocity: “boooo!!!”

    There are some positive comments as well, along with the usual PC vs. Mac “X ripped off Y” jibber jabber. However, with over 200,000 views and an average rating of 2 stars, it can’t be ALL Mac evangelists down-voting this video… or can it? It’ll be interesting to see what people think of a demonstration that’s longer than 18 seconds.

    Ah, the Apple Tablet. I honestly wonder how large the market is for an easily breakable sheet of LCD that serves us newspaper articles we don’t read anyway, on a surface that’s hard to read, during a recession.

    Other tech gamechangers made complete sense. A little box that carries around my entire music library? Great! A rectangular box that lets me watch hollywood movies from my home? Outstanding! A service that allows me to keep in touch with my college friends 24/7? Sign me up!

    What need is the Apple Tablet filling? Our innate desire to carry around a big sheet of metal with our laptops? Why do people keep insisting on shoving a level of device between our cell phone and our laptop?

    The iPhone was a great idea because it merged two devices we were carrying around anyway – our iPod and our cell phone. The laptop was a great idea because it merged our need for computing with our need for mobility. What’s the point of something that’s too big to use as a cell phone and too cumbersome to use as a laptop?

    I hope I’m wrong about this one, because I like Apple and I’d hate to see them fail. But right now I’m predicting the tablet’s a diehard only device.

    • ]]>     If this rumor provided by AppleInsider is true, then Apple is creating an iPhone/Apple Tablet keyboard that retracts when necessary. This would fix the issue with the iPhone’s touchscreen keyboard being hard to use – if when entering a URL, a series of 26 bumps were to appear, it’d be a lot easier to enter the data. Then, when you’re ready to go back to clicking and dragging, the bumps would vanish.

    Wow, I’ve never spent so much time outlining something that’s a complete rumor, but I’m excited at the very idea of this technology. It’d be like trapping your very own Odo in a cell phone!

    I’ll be honest: I’ll take any excuse whatsoever to play video of Odo from Deep Space Nine.
