A Swiss artist embarked into the nuclear wasteland surrounding power plants and came back with some lovely water colors.

Scientific illustrator Cornelia Hesse-Honegger details these minute mutations in the so-called true bugs she collects near nuclear facilities and areas of chemical contamination.

True bugs don’t travel far, and they “suck the liquid from the plants they live on,” she says. “So if the plant is contaminated, they take a lot of radioactivity into their bodies.”

It’s pretty amazing to see what kind of mutations can pop up even at a well-maintained nuclear facility — especially in such nice painting.

It makes me wonder what that runoff is doing to humans downstream.

Wampa Rug is Star Wars Sexy

I really can’t see how any self-respecting Star Wars geek could pass this up. Think Geek has an amazing Wampa skin rug on sale for$100, which is a small price to pay for how much nerd girl/guy action you’ll get from it.

The 62 x 30-inch rug is made of synthetic fur and has a non-slip backing, which is an important feature for many reasons I can think of. Unfortunately, the rug doesn’t include a hot slave Leia.

The Joker comes to iPad

The moment a new piece of technology is released, there’s always someone who does something really cool with it. For example, The Joker and Catwoman pictures you see here were drawn entirely on an iPad using Sketchbook Pro. Granted, they were drawn by legendary comic book artist Jim Lee. Yes, he draws for a living. But drawing with your fingers on a brand-new piece of technology and producing these – well, that’s bad- ass no matter who you are.

Art For Geeks: Star Wars Mosaic Last Supper

A big, big time Star Wars fan spent two weeks creating a mosaic version of Eric Dechamps‘ Star Wars themed last supper painting — and he created it completely from frames of the movies.

Avinash Arora created the image from 69,000 images, or what he said amounted to one of every 20 frames from the entire series.

… There are mosaic maker programs out there, and that’s how I started. I used a program that does it for you, didn’t like the way it was turning out, and couldn’t process large files. I “hacked” the program and wrote in my own algorithm, which is a slightly modified version of theirs and requires a really…REALLY powerful computer to compute.

Since mine’s just above average it took a long time for the initial composition. Then about 6 compositions later I started working on it manually. By rough estimation, i’d say I replaced about 1200-1500 images manually (cut/crop, etc.) and it improved the image DRASTICALLY. For this reason there are likely to be doubles, but I tried to avoid it.

Arora said that he touched up the colors too to make it look better.

At the end he wound up with a 2GB image that would have measured 5 feet by 11 feet, but the printer’s computer wasn’t powerful enough to open the file. He said he also saw the genius of grommets, but only after his poster was complete.

I didn’t get grommets put in on the first one, and now I’m regretting it… how the fuck do I hang up a 6 foot long 3 pound poster???

Who Says Print is Dead? World Of WarCraft Has It’s Own Magazine!

I’m a big gamer, but when you start talking about World of WarCraft, my eyes tend to roll back in my head and I zone out like you’re talking about sports. That said, I wish my favorite game franchises got the type of support that WoW does. The World of WarCraft magazine was announced some time ago, but now we’ve had a chance to take a look at it, and it’s pretty damn cool. Each issue is 148 pages and completely ad-free, thanks to a subscription-only model ($40 for four issues, $70 for eight). Publisher Future US has an interactive preview of the first issue online, and it’s undeniably sweet. I’m sure there will be some designers who have never played a minute of WoW picking this one up just for the art.
