I’m only writing about this because this story’s everywhere, but the National Science Foundation recently proposed an idea – what if electric cars could sell their extra unused energy back into the energy grid?

It’s a shift in perspective – as opposed to simply being energy consumers, plugging in and sucking energy down, they could plug in and resell stored energy, in essence becoming little mobile power storage units. And given that more and more hybrids are coming with solar panels installed, a car could conceivably be making you money while parked & plugged in under the hot sun.

So why haven’t we written about this yet? Because it’s ludicrously theoretical, that’s why. Before we start coming up for ways that electric cars can make their users money, why don’t we focus on the fact that almost nobody has an electric car?

This is the most cart-before-the-horse story circling the blogosphere right now, but hey, I guess if it inspires one idiot to buy an electric car assuming it’ll make them rich on energy production, it’ll all be worth it. Now get out there and buy electric cars before I come after you personally!

I’m not even going to pretend I know what the hell is going on in this graphic, but apparently, it’s what it looks like when pure energy is teleported.
OK. So, there’s this quantum phenomenon called “entanglement” in which two particles can share the same space while simultaneously being very far apart – even light years.

Changes to one particle immediately registers with the other – which is crazy – and is called teleportation.

So scientists at Tohoku University in Japan figured out a way to include energy with that teleportation. It involves “making a measurement on each one an entangled pair of particles,” a measurement which, when performed on the first particle, injects quantum energy into the system. Then, by performing that same measurement on the second particle, you can extract that original energy from the system.

Uh…so, now that we’ve proven we can teleport energy, can we get a flying car or something? Phasers? I’d settle for phasers.

Creepy? Well, yes, but it’s also very cool – they’ve created a way to turn silicone sheets into “piezoelectric” materials that generate electricity when flexed. In other words, silicon implants – or giant sheets of silicon fashioned into cloth – will be able to store the energy produced by every single thing we do, like the stillsuits from Dune, or some even nerdier sci-fi reference.

We don’t produce much electricity with just our regular movements, but the new implants can capture 80% of it – that’s enough to power an MP3 player, cell phone, or even a pacemaker! The latter is the most revolutionary – currently, when a pacemaker’s batteries need replacement, the patient has to to undergo surgery. With these new implants, a pacemaker’s batteries can be constantly recharged through, say, silicon implants against the patient’s lungs collecting the energy produced by natural breathing.

Amazing!

For those who actually understand such things, these implants represent the “first successful combination of silicone and nanoribbons made of lead zirconate titanate (PZT)”. Lead zirconate has piezoelectric characteristics that allow it to generate electricity when squeezed – again, 80% of that mechanical energy is converted to electrical energy, which is incredibly efficient.
