It’s a phone charger and a giant robot model! Actually, for those of you who aren’t genuine nerds, the robot is actually a Gundam – a mechanized character from a long-running Japanese toy line and anime series. Obviously, this phone charger is a Japanese-only type of deal, as it’s for the Softbank network and includes a Gunpla phone. Heard of them? I didn’t think so.

The kit includes a 1:100 scale Gundam model, the phone crandle, decals and a 12.1 OLED phone. Sometimes I wonder why I don’t live in Japan.

Now I’m not sure if the endeavor will produce a sassy Futurama-esque robot or a sad Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy version, but I’m really hoping of the former. I am sure, however, that the Japanese coop named Astro-Technology SOHLA will include a sweet laser sword — it is the land of anime after all.

The coop is looking to do the build the robot on the cheap too. They estimate they can complete the project with just $10 million. Doesn’t sound cheap? The Spirit and Opportunity mission set us back a total of $820 million.

Sure that was Mars, but this is a F&$%ING robot!

The group also stated that they hope to have their robot, which they will name Maido-kun, hitch a ride to the moon with a robotic surveying rover that the Japan’s Aerospace Agency is looking to launch as soon as 2015.

The Yomiuri noted that JAXA’s team had considered a bipedal robot, but passed on the idea due to technical difficulties with the sandy moon surface. In response to such thought, SOHLA President Hideo Sugimoto stated, “It’s easier to encapsulate romanticism or enthusiasm with a robot that is similar in shape to humans. We want to build a robot that has the appeal of entrusting the dream of going to space.”

It sure is romantic, it really gets me thinking about the real future of space travel. With the Space Plane launching just a week ago, and now a robot, space exploration doesn’t seem as dangerous.

Hypothetically, we could send these space planes and walking robots running willy-nilly all over the galaxy. Then we wouldn’t have to worry about the grim but imminent prospect of human space deaths.

These robots could plunk down on Mars and start building astronaut housing or take that trip to an asteroid that President Barack Obama has been talking about sans all the danger.

I just hope there is an easy-to-find off switch when the robot goes crazy and stalks our astronauts on the moon or mars.

The video from MIT distills all the pertinent information, but doesn’t capture the scope that something like this could have. Hypothetically, the “Flyfire” technology could create giant moving displays about anything anywhere.

Think of those cheesy laser light shows that once blew people’s minds. Bands could use this to fill a stadium with their light displays or video of the band. Outdoor venues could have towering video arrows instead of spotlights.

I guess advertisers could use the technology to advertise to people in airplanes or at popup events like carnivals that don’t need dedicated billboards or lighting.

It’s not going to be HD video in the sky, but with a little creativity a swarm of flying robots could wow just about anyone.

I love PETA. It’s one of the few organizations in the world that can take good intentions into the realm of surrealist comedy. The latest baffling idea from the well-meaning yet severely misguided People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals organization is that we should replace the famous weather-forecasting Punxsutawney Phil with a robot groundhog. Apparently, PETA thinks it’s unfair that the animal has to live in safe, well-tended captivity and needs to work one day a year.

Phil’s keepers say that he’s treated “better than the average child in Pennsylvania.” The state Department of Agriculture checks in on the critter annually to confirm that he’s being well-treated.

A few things are clear to me: Phil the groundhog is doing just fine, PETA’s out for some publicity, and robot groundhogs would be terrifying. If a robo-hog took over for the real deal, where would it end? I’d have to assume that robot weathermen would be next.

Anthropomimetic robots:

European researchers aims to bridge that gap — its robot prototype is anthropomimetic, meaning it mimics the human form. There’s a skeleton made of thermoplastic polymer, actuators that correspond to each muscle and kiteline as tendons. The goal is to create a more human-like robot that interacts with and responds to environments the way we do.

Very cool — it’s nice to see what I’ll be running from in the near feature.

Piezoelectric displays:

Companies can now create screens that can change shape or texture. This year, the technology is expected to make the leap into mainstream consumer products, offering the potential for mobile devices with screens that can harden protectively when turned off, and soften into a depressible touchscreen when turned on.

I have a feeling these will be squishy and really weird to use, but I’ll be the first to try it out!

Now some of you may be watching this video, thinking, “Wow! That’s pretty ingenious! That electromagnetic robot would be really useful on metal surfaces, and that one with the glue and tread system would work anywhere!” You’d then mince away, giggling to yourself as your mind fills with practical, world-changing applications for these clever machines.

Of course, that would make you a filthy ‘bot sympathizer. When the metal ones start crawling in your windows and stabbing your portly security guards in the face, don’t come crying to me. Or Sam Waterston.

We tried to warn you:

Lord knows what dark inspiration set upon their editors, but bless their hearts – these photos are some of the best/worst things I’ve seen on the internet in a while.

Check out my cardboard friend to the left, who looks terrible for so many hilarious reasons. For starters, most robots do not wear sandals. Those that do are smart enough to not wear socks with those sandals. Finally, even if a robot did wear socks with his sandals, he’s likely be smart enough to create adaquate armholes, to avoid falling over and looking even more like a doofus.

Nah, just kidding – this is Robovie-II, a robot that’s been deployed to an actual supermarket to help the elderly buy groceries. You email the store your shopping list before you arrive, and Robovie-II walks around with you, helping you complete the list and making adorable purchase suggestions, like a $50 bottle of scotch, or a 10lb lobster.

Look at him. Big, friendly eyes. Adorable nose. When the robot rebellion comes, I sure hope it’s this adorable.

Have you seen this $100,000 dinobot? His owners are worried sick! The robotic t-rex, pictured left, is part of a traveling Australian education show called “Walking With Dinosaurs.” It’s 5 feet tall, remote controlled, and was recently stolen while the show was in Mexico. The show’s producers state that it’s the least expensive of all their robots, so it could have been worse. Still, I’d love to hear about whatever Ocean’s 11 style hijinx went into stealing this thing. If you see it, please contact me so I can contact them and claim the gigantic reward.

Yes, you are attracted by her girlish gestures. But those gestures could soon be…your gestures! That’s right, the robot to my left is being sold by the Japanese department store Sogo & Seibu, and can be moulded to look like an exact replica of you. You can even record phrases into the robot so it can “speak” like you! Will creepy, creepy wonders ever cease? I hope not.
