Wired’s Danger Room has a great write-up on an interview today Anatoly Perminov, the head of Russia’s space agency, on Voice of Russia radio.
Perminov: “People’s lives are at stake…we should pay several hundred million dollars and build a system that would allow to prevent a collision, rather than sit and wait for it to happen

Anatoly Perminov, you’re absolutely right. So what’s your plan?

Perminov: “No nuclear explosions…[everything will be done] on the basis of the laws of physics.”

Boo, Minister Perminov, boo. Launching nuclear weapon’s at asteroids is my life’s dream. I’ll be damned before you take it away from me.

In the interview Perminov outlines no concrete asteroid-busting steps. But hey, it’s nice to know we’re not the only country working the planetary neighborhood watch anymore.
