This finding show that – no surprise – people would rather view their digital content on a nice big screen than on a monitor or laptop display.

The breakdown is as follows – around 41% of those internet connected televisions were IETVs, or internet enabled TV’s. 20.3% were connected via video game console (like the XBOX 360 or PS3), 13.2% via internet connected Blu-ray players, and 12.3% via digital boxes or their PCs.

For those not in the know, internet enabled TV’s connect to your home internet setup via wireless or a hard line ethernet connection. The study showed that these internet enabled TV’s had seen the largest spike in sales, up a whopping 14.2% from the previous month.

Given this trend, iSuppli predicts that sales of IETVs will climb to 87.6 million units worldwide by 2013, up from 2009’s 14.7 million.

Ars Technica has a fun article up that directly concerns your next big-screen Super Bowl party – according to Title 17, Chapter 1, Section 110 of US Copyright Law states that “TV broadcasts and movie showings can only be displayed so long as “no such audiovisual device has a diagonal screen size greater than 55 inches, and any audio portion of the performance or display is communicated by means of a total of not more than 6 loudspeakers.”

Freaky, right? Luckily, there’s another provision – an exemption that states that as long as the television is within a private residence, it doesn’t constitute a public broadcast and therefore doesn’t break the law.

Good thing our founding fathers envisioned a time in which televisions would be gigantic. Or whoever it was who wrote US copyright law, as I actually doubt it was the founding fathers. Pretty fun to imagine George Washington and Thomas Jefferson puzzling over flatscreens, though.
