Youtube Huge Resolution Update

The people over at Youtube announced this weekend during the VidCon that their players will support the 4k resolution videos, which is (yes) four times larger than 1080p (and twice as much as IMAX). The ideal screen to watch a 4k video must have 25 feet (that’s alright, I’ll just turn my bedroom wall into an LCD). As most of us aren’t yet fully accustomed with normal HD so to say when streaming, this breakthrough sound really awesome, but at a second glance you realize that you need a way faster connection (“light speed” as Ramesh Sarukkai from Youtube says) than the one you probably have right now and a display to go with it(are there any displays available in regular stores able to handle this resolution?). You would probably end up investing more in streaming 4k video than in a state of the art console system (or a wedding or a car).

Youtube put together an initial playlist of five videos which can be seen in a 4k resolution and if your connection and gear can take it, go right ahead and let us now how it was. I guess that someone could open a 4k theme bar where people could watch youtube vids and have cocktails. I always wanted to watch CC Catch clips at the craziest resolution available.

Watch Google’s “Froyo” Presentation

If you’re at all interested in mobile phones or Google, you’ve heard about Froyo. That’s the code name for Android 2.2, the latest version of Google’s mobile phone operating system. You’ve probably heard its main selling points as well – a massive speed increase, Flash support, better Gmail and phone-to-laptop “tethering.” But if you’re a big dork about your Android phone (like me), you may want more information about the software update beyond the bullet points. Well, don’t say we never gave you anything, because here’s the complete Froyo presentation from the recent Google I/O conference. It’s a beefy 45 minutes long, but obviously it answers pretty much any question you might have.

Online Video Guide Clicker Launches Redesign

For those unaware, Clicker is an online video site that acts as a guide to other online video sites serving up television episodes and movies. It crawls Hulu along with cable and network television sites, and keeps track of what episodes of what shows are available for instant viewing.

Until now, Clicker was like the phone book – you could look up what you wanted in it, but it was big and intimidating, and you had to know what you were looking for to find it. They just launched a redesign which makes the site much more like Hulu, or a suggestion engine, in that the site now actively recommends content for you to watch.

I tried it out today and I have to say, I like it much better. I hadn’t even thought to watch the new episode of “The Office,” but Clicker was like, “you want to watch this?” and I was like, “yes, yes I do, Clicker.” And now as I write this article, I’m watching the episode of The Office where Pam gives birth to her baby. What a wonderful world this is.

Adult Video Gamers Fat & Depressed, Say Researchers Stating Obvious

Adult video gamers are typically fatter and more depressed than their non-gaming counterparts, according to a new study from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Working in conjunction with Emory and Andrews Universities, the study interviewed 500 people, aged 19 through 90. Of those, about 45% said they played video games – and of those, female gamers listed a higher rate of depression, while male gamers had higher body-mass indexes than non-gamers.

Makes perfect sense to me. Sitting in front of a laptop all day, arguing with other nerds about Avatar? Eschewing sunlight for the warm, inviting light of Azeroth? Sounds pretty fat and depressing!

Still, one wonders if we needed this study. Researchers had to interview 500 people to find out gamers were fat and depressed? You think they’d stop at interview number three – all the respondents walking into the interview room wearing XXXL Gremlins II t-shirts is a surefire giveaway that all may not be right and cozy in the land of wireless ethernet connections.

Yubby: Google For Video, Not Much Else

Finally, there’s a service that searches all the other websites that carry video and allows you to put them all into one embeddable player. Or if such a service did exist, I wasn’t aware of it and so this feels new. Anyway, it’s called Yubby, and covers 34 different search services, from the bigger names like Youtube and Yahoo! Video to smaller engines like Veronica, a video service so obscure that I cannot find it online.

It’s easy enough to use, and I created the following little embeddable video widget cataloging some video of a hilarious performer named “Asterios Kokkinos.” Watch out for this guy, he’s clearly got talent and moxie!

What’s that? It doesn’t work with Wordpress, and only creates a hyperlink? Boo, Yubby, boo. What, am I supposed to dust off my Myspace page to embed this damn thing? Individual videos can be embedded if your Wordpress page has the right plugins installed, but I can’t get this player as a whole to work.

Wow, what a dissapointment. The entire internet’s running on Wordpress, Yubby! Get it together!

So, the verdict – Yubby is pretty good if you’re looking for a video and don’t feel like searching 34 different websites. But its embeddable player, which is supposedly the point of it, can’t be linked to in Facebook and can’t be embedded in a Wordpress post.
